Families evacuated in Sardinia as wildfires rage
Over 100 families were evacuated from their homes in Sardinia on Tuesday as a wildfire raged close by, according to Italian press reports.
People were reported to have sought safety on the beach in Pistis, on Sardinia’s south west coast. The fire broke out along the coast of Arbus in the early afternoon and was fuelled by strong winds.
Flames were reported to have come just a few meters away from peoples’ homes.
The forestry service, volunteers, two Canadair planes and three helicopters battled to put out the blaze, with the situation now reported to be "under control".
Eight other fires are reported to be raging across the island, including in Santadi, Guspini, Siliqua and Portoscuso.
