Pope Francis responded to a letter given to him by a 3-year-old girl, and extended his blessings to her "family, friends and teachers at nursery".

Helped by her grandmother, Alice Maria Rocca wrote and delivered the letter to the Pope by hand as he greeted worshippers during a visit to St Peter’s Square to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Pope John XXIII in early June, reported newspaper Articolo Tre.

The Pope was swift to respond, and the Vatican City-stamped envelope took her family by surprise.

“We did not expect it,” Alice’s mother said. “Out of the hundreds of thousands of letters the Pope receives each day from all over the world, he replied to us.”

In his response, the Pope thanked the child for her “delicate” thought and passed on his blessings to her parents, grandmother, loved ones, friends and teachers at nursery.
