An unemployed Italian woman and her daughter, from Rimini, turned to prostitution in a bid to support their struggling family amid Italy's ongoing financial crisis.

The pair was picked up by police in the central Emilia-Romagna area on Saturday night, Rimini Today reported.

They reportedly started prostituting themselves recently after their family found themselves in a dire financial situation.

Police Commander Luigi Grasso said the case pointed to a “decline in the social environment” in Rimini.

“It is essential to intervene with all available instruments to protect security and lawfulness, without forgetting the human aspect and the condition of absolute desperation and difficulty of the women forced into prostitution who can be taken advantage of,” he told Rimini Today.
