Italy has confirmed its reputation as a tourist hotspot, with the island of Lampedusa being home to the best beach in the world and the country winning more awards for its hotels than any other in TripAdvisor's Traveller's Choice Awards for 2013.

Rabbit beach in Lampedusa, an island off Sicily better known for being the landing point for thousands of migrants each year, topped the poll for best beaches in the world, followed by Grace Bay in the Turks and Caicos islands and Airlie Beach in Australia.

"Caribbean colours, white beach, unique setting. The crystal clear sea makes it difficult to leave," wrote a visitor to Rabbit beach on the TripAdvisor website.

Italy also scooped more awards for its hotels than any other country in the world, with 152 honoured out of 7,117 listed. Most of Italy's best hotels were in the Trentino Alto Adige region.

The Cavallino Bianco Family Spa Grand Hotel in Ortisei, Bolzano, also came first in the 'best hotel in the world for families' category.

Rome came fourth in the list of top 10 best destinations, followed by Venice in sixth place and Florence in eighth. Paris was voted the world's best destination, followed by New York and London.

The awards are determined on the basis of the millions of reviews on TripAdvisor's website. The site is the largest travel community in the world, operating in 34 countries and providing 125 million reviews of 3.1 million hotels, restaurants and attractions.
