A man was caught on Tuesday straddling the back of a train from Rome's central station, in a desperate attempt to catch his flight after the doors closed before he could get inside a carriage.

The Somali man was stopped by police at Rome’s Termini station, after being spotted sitting precariously on the back of the train bound for Fiumicino airport.

Arriving late to catch his train, “without worrying about the possible consequences, he clung to the rear of the train as it was leaving the platform,” the police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The scene was caught on CCTV (below), showing the train pulling out of Termini and a passenger on the platform nonchalantly glancing at the Somali man clutching onto the back of it.

Police proved more concerned, however, with stopping the train and charging the man for interrupting the public service, ignoring his plea that he had a flight to catch to Sicily.
