Man starved and beat wife to force abortion
A man in central Italy has been arrested after allegedly keeping his pregnant wife captive, beating and starving her in a bid to force her to have an abortion.
The 48-year-old man was arrested at his home in Sant’Agata Bolognese, a village between Modena and Bologna, police said in a statement released on Monday.
The Moroccan was caught after his 30-year-old wife escaped the family home and went to the authorities.
She told police she had been kept captive at home by her husband, who allegedly beat and starved her.
The mistreatment was aimed at terminating his wife’s two-month pregnancy, as he did not want her to have the baby. He is now facing charges of abuse and kidnapping, police said.
The couple reportedly has another child.
