A.C. Milan striker Mario Balotelli has joined other global celebrities in the 'Ice Bucket Challenge', a social media craze aimed at raising awareness for a serious motor neuron disease.

In a video (see below) posted on Balotelli’s Instagram account, the football star is seen emptying a bucket of ice-cold water over his head before letting out a deafening scream.

Balotelli then nominates A.C. Milan teammates Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien as well as former Manchester City teammate Micah Richards. In turn, they will have to take on the challenge and nominate others to do so.

The ‘Ice Bucket Challenge’ was started by 27-year-old former college baseball player Pete Frates, who for the past two years has suffered from amytrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

A neurodegenerative disease which causes muscle atrophy, difficulty with speaking and breathing, ALS has gained huge global awareness since celebrities began completing the icy challenge.

On Monday Real Madrid football star Cristiano Ronaldo took on the challenge (see below) after being nominated by former Manchester United team mate Darren Fletcher.

The activity has gone viral on social media over the past two months, with the American ALS reporting an eightfold increase in donations (€10M-$13.3M) in July compared to a year ago.
