To mark the release of a new photography book on Venice, The Local speaks to editor JoAnn Locktov about falling in love with Italy’s canal city.

Eighteen years after first visiting Venice, Locktov still remembers the moment: “When I first stepped foot on Venetian soil I had this overwhelming feeling of falling in love with a place on earth, which took me by surprise.

“I loved it like a living, breathing entity.”

The American publicist thereafter made sure she kept coming back, learning about mosaics at Venice’s Orsoni Smalti Veneziani workshop and writing two books on the topic.

Her third venture in the publishing world - Dream of Venice - gathers images of the city shot by Charles Christopher, a photographer hailing from LA.

“It was such an intimate view of the city,” says Locktov. “After a couple of months of sharing ideas and beautiful photography, I was completely compelled to do a book with him.”

The new book was published this month and features literary contributions, such as poems and stories, from both Italians and foreigners.

We’ve gathered ten photos from the book to inspire you to visit Venice.
