Silvio Berlusconi hospitalized for heart condition
Italy’s former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi was admitted to hospital in Milan on Tuesday morning for a heart problem, according to a spokeswoman for his party.
The condition is not life threatening but the Forza Italia leader will spend several days at the city’s San Raffaele hospital undergoing checks, the spokeswoman said.
The 79-year-old, who governed Italy four times, underwent heart surgery in the US in 2006 to correct an irregular heart rhythm, a few weeks after collapsing at a political rally.
Berlusconi, who turns 80 in September, was said to have been feeling tired towards the end of the local elections campaign, and was showing signs of exhaustion on Sunday.
These signs intensified on Monday, La Stampa reported, prompting his doctor, Alberto Zangrillo, to suggest a series of hospital check-ups.
