Father kills self after son’s suicide attempt

A teacher has killed himself in Verbania, north west Italy, hours after his son attempted suicide. Press reports suggest that the father believed his son was dead when he took his own life. The boy, meanwhile, remains in a coma.
According to Italian media reports, the double tragedy occurred last Friday June 21st, on the boy’s sixteenth birthday, following an argument between the father and son. The pair had apparently been exchanging text messages that day, reports Italian daily La Stampa.
The father, a 51-year-old physical education teacher referred to only as B., shot himself after hearing the news of his son. The paper speculates that he probably believed his son to be dead.
The boy’s mother, also a physical education teacher and identified only as P., said her son had been going through a “teenage crisis” that they had thought to be over.
“We have to stay close to our children and listen to them properly,” she told the paper. “It’s a fragile generation, they are in a world that’s falling apart. For them it’s more difficult to grow. Let’s give him our time.
“It’s true that children look for conflict with their parents but we can also educate them in another way, by letting them grow.”
“We’re waiting for another CAT-scan,” she added. “He needs us all to be close to him and pass on lots of energy and affection. That way he can come back to us.”
She did not wish to comment about the suicide of the boy’s father, her ex-husband.
The father’s funeral will be held today and is expected to be attended by his students.
