Three health care workers have been put under house arrest after footage emerged of them abusing elderly people in their care, Italian media has reported.

A nurse, a cook and another worker were arrested in the city of Terni following a three-month investigation by the Guardia di Finanza, local newspaper Giornale dell'Umbria reported.

The trio are accused of personal injury against elderly and vulnerable people, the newspaper said. Two other health workers have been banned from care centres and communicating with those arrested or the close relatives of the accused.

CCTV footage released by the authorities (below) shows a torrent of abuse which includes victims being hit, having things thrown at them, being left isolated and one falling.

The decision to make the arrests was taken after an Alzheimer's sufferer fell and broke their femur, in a bid to avoid further physical and mental abuse, Giornale dell'Umbria said.
