Tweeters in Veneto are the happiest
Tweeters in Veneto are the happiest in Italy, according to a study by researchers at the University of Milan.
Those tweeting from the region, particularly in Venice and Treviso, sent the most ‘joyous’ messages on the social network in 2012, reaching a happiness score of 46.7 percent compared to the national average of 45.6 percent, the study found.
However, those tweeting from Belluno, north of Venice, are slightly under the weather compared to their regional counterparts with a happiness score of just 42 percent.
“I’m not surprised Veneto is first; in Verona we have a very strong humour, sometimes a little cynical, but always fun,” Jerry Cala, an actor, musician and film director told Corriere del Mezzogiorno.
The researchers found that Italians projected the most joy over Twitter on occasions such as Valentine’s Day, Christmas Day and Mother’s Day.
“It reflects a traditionalist Italy, with people attached to the family, and certainly their mothers, but also who want to have fun and be romantic,” they said.
However, journalist and blogger, Selvaggia Lucarelli, was slightly more sceptical.
"I don’t think it’s possible to measure happiness in 140 characters on the internet, often because you live a parallel life, a completely different one online to the real one. Therefore, the messages a person sends does not necessarily reflect their true state of mind,” she told Corriere.
