The mayor of Pozzuoli, Vincenzo Figliolia, has declared three days of mourning after 39 people from the southern Italian town were killed in a coach accident on Sunday night.

In a statement, he expressed his sympathy to the families affected by the tragedy, which has “struck the community”.

At least a dozen were injured after the bus careered off a road close to Naples and fell 30 metres down a slope on Sunday night.

Figliolia visited the gymnasium of a school in Monteforte Irpino, where the bodies have been placed, on Monday morning.

Passengers were returning from a pilgrimage to Pietrelcina, the birthplace of Saint Pio, an Italian priest canonised in 2002 who is highly venerated in southern Italy.
