Police in Tor Sapienza in the east of Rome, have arrested five people – including three prostitutes – after angry residents sent photos to the Rome-based newspaper Roma Today of couples copulating in nearby parkland.
According to the residents, outdoor sexual activity is a common spectacle in their neighbourhood – so much so that it has become “intolerable”.
In the photos, which have been circulated on Twitter, grainy images show people who appear to be engaging in sexual activity in plain sight of a nearby housing complex.
According to Il Messaggero, the frequent activities were in view of children on their way to school and passing cars.
“Prostitution and sexual activity in public areas during the day is visible to all, and in the area of via Palmiro Togliatti they are always increasing,” local police chief Raffaella Modafferi told Il Messaggero newspaper.
Police have now promised to crack down on the problem by increasing patrols and checks in the area.
"Faced with this phenomenon we are increasing checks, especially near schools and parks," said Modafferi.
This isn't the first time 'al fresco' sex has hit Italian headlines. In June this year, The Local reported that C-guide, a website dedicated to providing advice on all the best places in Italy for outdoor sex, was thought to be favoured by young lovers living with their parents.
