Andrea Benedetti and three off his friends got stuck in the life of an apartment block in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Sydney Morning Herald reported.

They managed to open the doors and Benedetti attempted to climb out, but instead fell down the lift shaft and was killed instantly, Australia’s The Daily Telegraph newspaper said.

Building manager Roula Ghosum told the newspaper the escape attempt was entirely unnecessary, as a technician was already on his way.

“It only took him four minutes to get here from when the lift became stuck. That’s exactly what the emergency button is there for and we responded as quickly as we could,” he said.

Benedetti was living in an apartment in the block with seven other people. One flatmate described his death as a “tragic accident”.

He had been in Australia for three months.
