Many foreigners arrive in Italy for a taste of a new culture, only to find it's easy to get by in English. So what's the point of learning Italian? The Local has come up with 10 reasons why knowing even just a few words will make the experience all the more enjoyable.

You might be able to get by with just the basics in many parts of Italy, but if you choose not to learn the language you're missing out on a lot that the country has to offer.

Literature and even restaurant menus can get lost in translation, and there's a reason many of the world's best operas are written in Italian. They don't call it the 'bella lingua' for nothing.
