A man dubbed the "Angel of Death" has been handed a life sentence for killing five pensioners in his care, in a nursing home close to Rome, Italian media reported on Monday.

Angelo Stazzi was found guilty of killing the pensioners with lethal doses of insulin in 2009, Il Secolo XIX reported.

Described as the “Angel of Death”, 69-year-old Stazzi killed at least five elderly residents in the ten months after starting work at the Villa Alex nursing home in Tivoli. He is suspected of two more murders at the carehome, but the court could not ascertain his guilt without reasonable doubt.

An investigation was launched after the carehome worker was charged with the murder of a colleague in 2009, for which he is currently serving a 24-year sentence, Il Secolo XIX said.

Before Stazzi joined the staff in Tivoli, there had been no deaths at the carehome by insulin overdose.

“He handled the insulin like a sniper ready to use his gun,” Public prosecutor Gabriella Fazi was quoted in Il Secolo XIX as saying, describing Stazzi as having “a cruel and narcissistic mind”.
