Italian breaks speed skiing world record

His speed on Monday bettered the previous record of 251.4km/h, which Origone clocked in April 2006 at Les Arcs in France.

The 1,220 metres Chabrieres slope has a maximum gradient of 98 percent, and an average of 52.5 percent.

The Italian speed skier dropped nearly 500m on the run, from the starting line at 2,715m altitude to the finish at 2,220m.

Speed skiing is widely described as the fastest non-motorized land sport, although it is not part of the Winter Olympic Games.
