Prince Harry to visit Italy in May: reports

British royal Prince Harry will visit Italy next month to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Battle for Rome, according to Italian media reports.

Prince Harry will come to Italy to mark the final battle of a four-month campaign by Allied troops to break through Nazi lines, also known as the Battle of Monte Cassino, Italian media said on Thursday.

When contacted by The Local, the British Embassy in Rome was unable to confirm reports of the mid-May visit.

The Battle of Monte Cassino commemorations are part of a series of Second World War anniversary events, including the January reenactment of the Allied landings on the beaches of Anzio close to Rome.

Reports of Prince Harry’s visit came on the sidelines of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Rome, where she met with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Pope Francis. The one-day visit, during which the Queen had lunch with Napolitano and exchanged gifts with the Pope, was the British monarch’s first trip abroad since 2011
