Three people died on Monday when the seaplane they were travelling in crashed after taking off from Lake Como, in northern Italy, Italian media reported.

The light aircraft crashed into the mountainous area around Premana, east of Lake Como, and caught on fire on impact.

Emergency services, including the fire service and mountain rescue, were brought in but were unable to save the pilot or passengers. The victims were not immediately identified.

The aircraft crashed into an inaccessible wooded area of the mountainside, leading rescuers to go on foot, Tgcom24 reported.
