A 68-year-old man from Rome died of a heart attack as he tried to climb into his first-floor apartment to retrieve his keys.

The tragedy occurred after the man, with the help of two neighbours, tried to climb onto the balcony of his apartment in the Spinaceto district of Rome on Tuesday evening, Il Messaggero reported.

He had planned to enter the apartment through the balcony door, which had been left open, in order to retrieve the keys inside.

But after climbing onto the balcony, he suffered a heart attack, Roma Today reported, citing eyewitnesses.

Neighbours called emergency services, but medics were unable to save him.
