Authorities said three boatloads of migrants were found drifting in the Mediterranean and were taken to the southern port of Reggio Calabria for processing. Dozens of women and children were among them.

Since the beginning of this year, more than 66,000 migrants and refugees, many of them fleeing conflict in Syria and elsewhere, have arrived on Italy's shores.

Italy's navy has been conducting rescue operations for months aimed at preventing more shipwrecks of the sort that have killed than 400 migrants.
