A 48-year-old Italian skier was reported missing on Monday after failing to return from a solo skiing expedition in the Gargellen ski resort in Vorarlberg near the Swiss border.

After he did not return home on Monday evening after a day of solo skiing, the man's wife reported him missing to authorities.

A helicopter with an infrared camera was launched, which searched for the man in vain until night fell.

Searchers resumed the search on Tuesday morning. The man's body was located beneath two feet of avalanche debris on the side of the Madrisajoch mountain at around 8 am.

His death brought Monday's avalanche death toll to three people, after two young American skiers lost their lives in an avalanche in Sölden in Tyrol.

Elsewhere in the region, across the border near the Italian town of Brunico three more victims were reported buried by an avalanche on Monday afternoon.

Reports indicate that one person perished in the Brunico slide and the two others were injured but successfully rescued.

On Tuesday two snowboarders were injured after being caught in an avalanche in Obertauern, Salzburg.
