Italian luxury automaker Ferrari is recalling about 800 cars in North America after discovering it had improperly installed Takata airbags, the defective equipment at the center of a worldwide recall.

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Ferrari North America is recalling 814 certain model-year 2015 vehicles, including 458 Italia, 458 Spider, 458 Speciale, 458 Speciale A, California T, FF, F12 Berlinetta, and LaFerrari cars.

The vehicles may be equipped with a driver side airbag "that was improperly assembled" which can cause the airbag "to deploy in a rotated orientation," the company reported.

In a crash, the faulty deployment increases the risk of injury, it said.

The high-end Italian automaker, which is in the process of being spun off this year from parent Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, manufactures about 7,000 vehicles annually.

Ferrari's problem with assembling the airbags comes amid a roiling scandal over defective airbags made by Japanese firm Takata, which have been linked to eight deaths and more than 100 injuries around the world.

Ten global automakers, including General Motors, Honda and Germany's BMW, are being forced to recall 34 million cars in the United States alone to replace the inflators -- the biggest recall in US history.
