Roberta Vinci will compete with fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta for a Grand Slam at the US Open on Saturday after a stunning victory over Serena Williams in the semi-final on Friday.

Vinci, ranked 43rd, beat world number one Serena Williams, 2-6, 6-4, 6-4, ending the American's Grand Slam run at the US Open.

Earlier in the day, Pennetta, ranked 26, defeated world number two Simona Halep, 6-1, 6-3.

Although Pennetta, 33, and Vinci, 32, have both won Grand Slam titles in doubles, this is the first time they've reached a Grand Slam singles final.
