Pizza is the most photographed and most 'selfied' food on Instagram, according to research carried out by an Italian chef.

The study was carried out by Alessio Mecozzi, head chef at the exclusive Castadiva resort on Lake Como in conjunction with Klaus Davi communication, Tgcom24 reported.

In an attempt to compare culinary trends in different countries worldwide, it shows interesting and unexpected patterns of food consumption.

Pizza was hands down the most photographed food on Instagram. Of the 300 million food photos posted on Instagram – a whopping 17 million of them contain the hashtag #pizza.

Surprisingly, the most popular place for a pizza snap was New York, where an incredible 6.1 percent of all photos contained the hashtag #pizza. Meanwhile, in Naples – the Italian city recognized as the home of pizza – just 2.1 percent of all photos contained #pizza.

The results reflect Americans' love of pizza – they scoff almost twice as much of it as their Italian counterparts annually – with each American seeing off an average of 13 kilos of pizza each year.

Italy was well-represented in the top ten most photographed foods, with many of the country's other longstanding food ambassadors highly-ranked.

Pasta came in third place with 6.3 million shots, while old photo favorite gelato came in ninth place with 1.4 million shots, one spot above hamburgers.

Mecozzi revealed that it was both men and women who were intent on snapping their food – but told La Repubblica that he had identified a difference.

“Men are more likely to photograph their main course, but women are more likely to photograph the desert,” he said.
