Summer may only just have finished, but plenty of people in Italy's mountainous regions woke up to a snowy surprise over the weekend.

Sunday saw the season's first snowfall in numerous towns in the Alps and Dolomites, with up to 20cm of the white stuff reported in some locations.

This morning we woke up with the tops of the Dolomites covered in snow.

The Dolomites in the northeast of the country saw snowfall in Cortina (Veneto), Madonna di Campiglio (Pinzolo), and Foppolo (Bergamo), while Alpine areas of Lombardy also experienced a blanket of snow.

Over 20cm of snow fell in some areas of the Italian Alps above 2,000 metres, but there was also some snowfall as low as 1,100 metres.

Madesimo and Livigno near the Swiss border both saw their first snow of the winter, a promising sign for the coming ski season.

Further snowfall is predicted for the coming week, and the Appennines in Emilia Romagna can also expect a light dusting at around 1,400 metres, according to forecasts from Il Meteo.
