Italy recorded 619 more deaths from Covid-19 on Saturday April 11th, 49 more than on Friday, on a day in which the US officially surpassed the Mediterranean nation as the country with the highest coronavirus death toll in the world.

The new figures take Italy’s total coronavirus death toll to 18,849 people.

Italy’s Civil Protection said that 100,269 people are currently infected with the virus due to Saturday’s increase of 1,996 cases.

Officials said that the overall total of cases in Italy (deceased, infected and recovered) currently stands at 152,271.

A total of 2,079 people in Italy recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the total recovery number to 32,534.

On Saturday a tally kept by Johns Hopkins University found that the United States had overtaken Italy as the country with the largest Covid-19 death toll.

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte announced on Friday there would be a third extension to the country’s lockdown until May 3rd.

Italy's interior minister Luciana Lamorgese also warned on Saturday of the risk the country faced in terms of extremist groups capitalising on the coronavirus crisis to carry out acts of terrorism in the country, adding that she'd asked police to intensify checks.
