The number of beaches in Italy ranked as meeting the highest global standards has increased again in 2020.

A total of 407 beaches across Italy were awarded the prestigious blue flag (bandiera blu) this year, up from 385 last year and 215 a decade ago.

The Italian regions with the highest number of blue flag beaches are Liguria (32), followed by Tuscany (20) and Campania (19).

The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) awards the well-known marker based on 32 different criteria,  from water quality to provision of facilities for visitors, and safety and environmental factors.

The environmental organisation monitors the coastlines of 44 countries, awarding the sought-after blue flags to beaches which meet their standards.

The indicator is invaluable for beachgoers who are looking to spend a day in the sun but are unsure of where to go.

Italian beaches are now reopening for the summer following the covid-19 lockdown, with rules in place to minimise the risk of coronavirus contagion.

Italy will see a dramatic fall in the number of holidaymakers arriving from abroad in 2020, tourism industry representatives say, however they hope more Italians will choose to spend their summer in Italy this year.
