Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte congratulated US President-elect Joe Biden and said he was ready to "make the transatlantic relationship stronger".
Premier Giuseppe Conte has said he “cannot wait” to work with United States President-elect Joe Biden.
“I express my profound congratulations to President-elect Joe Biden and Vice-President-elect Kamala Harris,” Conte told Italian news agency Ansa on Monday morning.
“We can't wait to work side by side on the great challenges of our time.”
Conte also congratulated Americans via Twitter shortly after the election was called in his favour over the weekend.
“Congratulations to the American people and institutions for an outstanding turnout of democratic vitality,” Conte tweeted in English, adding that “the US can count on Italy”.

Italian President Sergio Mattarella also sent his congratulations to Biden.
Mattarella stressed that the international community needs “the contribution of the United States … to face an unprecedented crisis that is jeopardizing the health, life and future of millions of people”.
Neither Conte or Mattarella referenced Donald Trump's administration in their comments.
