Conte also congratulated Americans via Twitter shortly after the election was called in his favour over the weekend.

"Congratulations to the American people and institutions for an outstanding turnout of democratic vitality," Conte tweeted in English, adding that "the US can count on Italy".

Italian President Sergio Mattarella also sent his congratulations to Biden.

Mattarella stressed that the international community needs "the contribution of the United States ... to face an unprecedented crisis that is jeopardizing the health, life and future of millions of people”.

Neither Conte or Mattarella referenced Donald Trump's administration in their comments.
