Italian Journey – J.W. Goethe (translation by W.H. Auden). First on O'Connell and Ross' list is this autobiographical account of Goethe’s travels in Italy between 1786–88. It’s described as “The best expression of the northerners’ fascination for Italy, the land where the lemon trees bloom”.
