"Nelson Mandela was absolutely one of the most important protagonists of the 21st century. When I gave him my hand...I felt the touch of history. In his hands there was the weight and the greatness of a life spent struggling in defence of an ideal," said Matteo Renzi, mayor of Florence and a leading member of Italy's Democratic Party (PD), on his Facebook page.
