Ten of Italy’s best islands

Ten of Italy’s best islands

Italy is known for Sicily, Sardinia and the luxurious Capri, but what about the country’s more obscure isles? After hearing today that a New Zealand businessman snapped up a slice of Italian paradise after paying €2.94m for Budelli island, The Local decided to take a look at some of Italy’s other gems.

LA MADDALENA, renowned for its beaches, is the largest of the Maddalena archipelago, which lies between Sardinia and Corsica. A causeway connects it to Caprera island, the former home of Italy's revolutionary politician, Giuseppe Garibaldi.Photo: CristianoCani/Flickr
PANAREA, the smallest of Sicily's seven-island Aeolian group, has been described as the place the 'jetset go to flee the rest of the jetset'. Gaining access is a challenge too: if you wish to stay on the paradise isle, you need to know someone. Photo: GhostInAShell/Flickr
PONZA is the largest island in the Pontine archipelago and lies between Rome and Naples. It has been raided by everyone from the Etruscans to the Turks and is a popular weekend retreat for boating enthusiasts and beachlovers. The best way to appreciate the island is to encircle it by boat and take a dip in the crystal clear water before tucking into some fresh seafood for lunch. Photo: Josephine McKenna
GIGLIO may be world famous for the Costa Concordia cruise ship that ran aground just offshore in January 2012. But the island, which lies off the coast of Tuscany, is a marine paradise and a hikers' delight. Stunning beaches, serene hiking paths and friendly folk make for a delightful visit.Photo: Josephine McKenna
SALINA is the second-largest of the Aeolian islands off the coast of Sicily. Its dramatic landscape emerges from six extinct volcanoes which are surrounded by stunning coves and pebbled beaches that have earned it World Heritage status. Settled by the Greeks and then the Romans, it is a summer haven and is slowly being discovered by more Italian and foreign tourists.Photo: Josephine McKenna
ISOLA D'ELBA is the largest island in the Tuscan archipelago and the third largest in Italy after Sardinia and Sicily. Along with Giglio, Giannutri and Montecristo, it is part of the National Park of the Tuscan group of islands, the largest marine park in Europe.Photo: LorenaTorresAngelini/Flickr
The fact that PROCIDA, the smallest island on the bay of Naples, is less popular with tourists than its neighbour, Capri, makes it all the more special. With its soft pastel-coloured houses and weathered fishermen, the island is a magnet for painters. It was also the setting for the Oscar-winning film, Il Postino (The Postman). FAVIGNANA is one of a comune of three islands located on the west coast of Sicily. It is famous for its tuna fisheries and can be reached by hydrofoil.Photo: MarcoMolino/Flickr
LIPARI is the largest of Sicily's Aeolian islands. Its beaches are mainly rocky, but fishing boats are on hand to take sunseekers to secret coves.Photo: MarcSmith/Flickr
One of the Pontine group of islands and located off the coast of Campania, VENTOTENE, a protected marine park, was once a Roman prison-island. It is also the home of one of Italy's best diving sites.Photo: LuigiVersaggi/Flickr
