Val di Noto, Sicily Tucked away In Sicily's southeast corner, the World Heritage-lauded Val di Noto is studded with honey-hued baroque towns. Among them are Ragusa, Noto and Modica, the latter home to the island's oldest chocolate factory, Dolceria Bonajuto (www.bonajuto.it). Just south of Modica, converted farmhouse Villa Quarterella (www.quartarella.com) makes for an atmospheric base.Photo: Shutterstock
Monti Lattari, Campania Framing the Amalfi coast, the densely wooded Lattari Mountains deliver hiking trails and arresting autumnal landscapes. One of the most spectacular trails is the 12km Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods), linking Praiano to Positano. In Positano, treat yourself to a few nights at Hotel Villa Franca (www.villafrancahotel.it), where the sea views melt hearts any time of year. Photo: Don Chili
Venice, Veneto As Venice sails into low season, its moniker 'La Serenissima' (The Most Serene) rings true again. Museum queues shorten and evening fog gives the city an enigmatic, operatic air. Accentuate the magic with tickets to the city's venerated opera house Teatro La Fenice (www.teatrolafenice.it) and a few nights by the crackling fire at boho-chic Novecento (www.novecento.biz).Photo: Josef Stuefer
Naples, Campania Underrated Naples remains one of Italy's best-kept secrets, and its mild climate makes it a sound spot for a late-autumn urban escape. Shout 'Encore' at the vainglorious Teatro San Carlo (www.teatrosancarlo.it), meditate on Caravaggio's Flagellation at the remarkably quiet Museo Nazionale di Capodimonte (www.coopculture.it), and slumber amongst contemporary art at Hotel Piazza Bellini (www.hotelpiazzabellini.com).Photo: Bill Stillwell
San Miniato, Tuscany Autumn heralds truffle season, a time when discerning gastronomes sniff their way to San Miniato for the town's annual Sagra del Tartufo Bianco. An epic truffle fair spanning three weekends in November and the first weekend in December, its protagonist is the prized white truffle, sold fresh and in a myriad of dishes. Call it a night at organic farm Barbialla Nuova (www.barbiallanuova.it), which organises its own truffle hunts in season. Photo: Shutterstock
Norcia, Umbria Prepare for your winter hibernation in Norcia. A favourite among foodies, the Umbrian town is famous for its black truffles and salumi made from acorn-fed pigs. Tuck into the season's harvest at lauded Trattoria dal Francese, and book a room at the extraordinarily atmospheric Palazzo Seneca (www.palazzoseneca.com), adorned with giant fireplaces, antiques, and a spa. Close by is the rugged beauty of the Parco Nazionale dei Monti Sibillini.Photo: Gianni Del Bufalo
Merano, Trentino-Alto Adige For an alpine high, hit the Habsburg-era spa town of Merano. Set snugly in the South Tyrol, the town is a veritable chocolate box of Art Nouveau architecture. Restore yourself at the town's svelte thermal baths, Terme Merano (www.thermemeran.it). A 15-minute drive from town is Miramonti (www.hotel-miramonti.com), a boutique hotel with spa, contemporary locavore restaurant, and easy access to crisp, clean woods. Photo: Shutterstock
Barolo region, Piedmont Piedmont's Barolo region is Valhalla for oenophiles, its vineyards producing some of Europe's most venerated reds. Get a crash course in all things vinicultural at the Museo del Vino a Barolo (www.wimubarolo.it) in medieval Barolo, and journey 16km northeast to the town of Asti, famed for its dark chocolate and truffles. A top place to stay is the Hotel Barolo (www.hotelbarolo.it), whose celebrated restaurant has been serving up local dishes for four generations.Photo: Megan Cole
Subiaco, Lazio Hidden away in amber-hued woods east of Rome, Subiaco is one of Lazio's best-kept secrets. The town's star attraction is the imposing hilltop Monastero di San Bendetto, adorned with rich 13th- to 15th-century frescoes and home to the very grotto in which St Benedict spent three years meditating. At the bottom of the same hill, the medieval Monastero di Santa Scolastica (www.benedettini-subiaco.org) runs a restaurant and B&B. Photo: Supermiagolator
Milan For music lovers, autumn means arias as Italy's opera season begins. Among the country's most beautiful opera venues is Milan's Teatro alla Scala (www.teatroallascala.org), inaugurated in 1778 with Antonio Salieri's Europa Riconosciuta. If you need a frock, score a classic designer piece at fashion outlet Il Salvagente (www.salvagentemilano.it), and make time for autumnal treats at food emporium Peck (www.peck.it).Photo: Melanie Bowman
