driving in Uk on an Italian licence

My son and daughter go between Italy and UK , (father lives in Italy, myself in UK). Does anyone have any advice on where best for them to get their driving licence, hoping in future to be able to drive in both countries? my daughter is currently in Italy and doing her test there – will she be able to drive on that licence when in UK? If my son does his test in the UK, how easy will it be for him to drive in Italy? Any thoughts or info welcome thanks!

  1. We changed our driving licenses to Italian after consulting with our UK insurance company. The advice given to us is that we can drive in definitely on an Italian license in the UK but only for a limited period on a UK license in Italy

  2. The driving licence should be held in the country you primarily reside. I think you get 12 months from the point of arrival in Italy to get an Italian one but as the rules may change then double check this.

Now I’ve moved to Italy I’ve not had a problem hiring cars in the UK with an Italian licence.
