Police in the southern Italian city of Bari have arrested a man caught smuggling six tonnes of cigarettes from Greece under a pallet of watermelons.

Lucio Giannone, 37, aroused suspicion when he became visibly agitated during a routine inspection, Bari Live news website reported.

A vehicle scan revealed a total of 29,927 cartons of cigarettes hidden under the fruit.

Giannone was promptly arrested for trafficking and the truck seized, Bari Live said.
