Italy's unemployment rate inched down to 12.1 percent in June but youth joblessness rose to a new high of 39.1 percent, preliminary official data showed on Wednesday.

Unemployment had reached a record high level of 12.2 percent in May and on a 12-month comparison the jobless rate was 1.2 percentage points higher, the Istat data agency said in a statement.

Seasonally adjusted data showed job-seekers rose to 3.089 million in June - 1.0 percent less than in May and 11.0 percent more than in June 2012.

Youth unemployment was 0.8 percentage points higher than in May and 4.6 points higher than in June 2012.

Italy is still stuck in recession and the government is forecasting the beginning of a gradual recovery at the end of this year.
