An off-duty policeman in Naples found himself in a gun battle with would-be thieves after he tried to foil their bingo hall robbery.

The policeman was parking his car in the early hours of Monday morning when he spotted a couple of balaclava-clad robbers, Il Mattino reported.

Despite noticing that they were wielding rifles, the policeman followed the duo inside the bingo hall before confronting them.

Realizing their bingo heist had been thwarted and not keen on surrendering, the pair instead headed for the door and began shooting at the policeman. He in turn shot back but was stopped by a third person who came to help his accomplices.

Nobody was injured in the attempted robbery and the three made it to their getaway car, Il Mattino said.
