A teaching assistant in central Italy has been caught on camera hitting and insulting a 12-year-old disabled boy in her care, Italian media reported on Thursday.

The 50-year-old woman was suspended from work on Wednesday following revelations of months of abuse, Rai News reported.

Authorities became aware of the case when the 12-year-old told his mother he was being mistreated during lessons in Viterbo, in the Lazio region.

After interviewing the boy with the help of child psychologists, authorities set up hidden cameras in his classroom to record the alleged abuse.

They documented episodes in which the boy was slapped, kicked and pushed by the teaching assistant. He was also threatened and mocked by her, Rai News said.

Following her suspension from work, the teaching assistant is now facing charges of mistreating a disabled minor in her care.
