Italy's national carrier Alitalia suspended flights to Tel Aviv on Tuesday amid escalating violence in Gaza.

The airline joins Germany's Lufthansa and Air France in suspending flights to and from Israel for at least 36 hours.

The European carriers made the announcement after American airlines US AIrways and United Airlines had taken similar action.

American aviation authorities barred its airlines from flying to and from Israel for at least 24 hours after a rocket landed near Ben Gourion airport in Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, the foreign ministers of Italy, France and Germany on Tuesday condemned anti-Semitic slurs and violence at pro-Palestinian demonstrations in Europe and pledged to take firm action.
