The 61-year-old from Alto Adige was making his descent, along with two other climbers and a guide, down Mount Rosa when the accident happened, according to a report on Quotidiano.

The group had been making their way down a ridge at an altitude of about 4,500 metres.

On Sunday, four mountain climbers were killed after falling 3,000 metres down a crevasse in the Valtellina region of the Italian Alps.

Meanwhile, a German woman fell to her death last Thursday while walking in Parcines, in the mountains of northern Italy.
