One dead and one injured in house explosion in Puglia
A man was killed and a woman seriously injured in an explosion that tore apart a traditional trullo dry stone hut in Cisternino, in Puglia’s Brindisi province, on Sunday morning, Ansa reported.
The victim, a 55-year-old man, was extracted from under the rubble around three hours after the blast. Paramedics' attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful, the report said.
A 53-year-old woman sustained severe burns, but her conditions were said to be non-life-threatening upon arrival at Brindisi’s Perrino Hospital.

Migrant arrivals down 62 percent in 2024
Some 35,725 migrants have arrived in Italy since the beginning of the year – down by 62 percent compared to the same period in 2023, Italian newspaper La Stampa said on Sunday.
Bangladeshi nationals were the largest group (7,615), followed by Syrians (5,725) and Tunisians (4,747), the report said.
Despite an overall decrease in landings, Italy has seen multiple migrant arrivals in recent weeks, with the Italian coastguard rescuing four vessels over the weekend
Two migrants died and one was reported missing earlier this month after a boat carrying over 30 people sank some 17 miles south-east of the city of Syracuse, eastern Sicily.
Italy beat US to secure historic women’s volleyball Olympic gold
Italy clinched its first-ever women’s volleyball Olympic title on Sunday after the Azzurre beat defending gold medalists US 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17), the Gazzetta dello Sport daily said.
Sunday’s title capped off a nearly impeccable campaign from the Italians, who only lost one set (against the Dominican Republic in the Olympic opener) during the whole tournament.
With Sunday’s win, Italy became the seventh nation to hold at least one Olympic gold in women’s volleyball, joining Russia (four), China (three), Cuba (three), Brazil (two), Japan (two) and the US (one).
The women’s volleyball title took the Italian gold tally at the Paris Games to 12 – two more compared to Tokyo 2020.
Yacht sinks off Sardinia’s coast following devastating fire
A 47-metre superyacht anchored in the Gulf of Olbia, on Sardinia’s northeastern coast, has sunk after a devastating fire broke out on board on Saturday evening, local media reports said.
Eight people of Turkish nationality were on board the vessel when the incident occurred. All managed to safely evacuate the yacht by using a tender.
The official cause of the fire was still unknown on Monday, though reports said the flames may have been started by a short circuit.
Dramatic footage released by Olbia fire authorities showed the flames spread from the aft portion of the vessel and then quickly engulf the whole yacht.
The yacht’s tank was believed to store around 50,000 litres of fuel at the time of the incident, but “no leakage has been detected" so far according to the Olbia coastguard.
