Storms forecast in northern Italy
A cold front moving in from northwestern Europe is expected to bring heavy rainfall and lower daytime temperatures to the north of the country from Monday, August 26th, according to Italian weather site ilmeteo.it.
Intense localised rain storms were forecast to hit the Alpine areas and foothills of Veneto, Lombardy, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Hot and muggy conditions were expected to persist in the centre, south and major islands Sicily and Sardinia, with daytime temperatures reaching highs of 35C.

Venice Film Festival
The 81st edition of the Mostra del Cinema di Venezia – the oldest film festival in the world – will get underway on Wednesday, August 28th, running until Saturday, September 7th.
After a quiet 2023 edition held amid the SAG-AFTRA labour strike, this year’s festival is set to feature a number of hotly anticipated movies, including Joker sequel Folie à Deux by director Todd Phillips.
Stars of the likes of George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Monica Bellucci, Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman are all set to step out onto the red carpet of the Lido di Venezia this year.

Heavy traffic expected on Italian roads
Motorists on Italian roads are expected to face heavy traffic from the morning of Friday, August 30th, to the morning of Monday, September 1st, as people make their way back home from their holiday destinations in what’s often referred to as il grande rientro (or ‘the big return’).
According to the official traffic calendar released by Italy’s State Police, the evenings of Friday and Saturday, and the whole of Sunday will be the worst times to hit the road as congestion may reach “potential critical conditions”.
Based on previous years’ events, motorways connecting the south of the country to the north and state roads (strade statali) connecting holiday hotspots by the sea or in the mountains to major urban centres are the most likely to become clogged with traffic over the weekend.

New national ID code required for tourist lets
Owners in Italy renting out their properties for periods of 30 days or less (these are known as affitti brevi turistici, or short-term tourist lets) will be required to hold a national identification code (codice identificativo nazionale, or CIN) from September 1st under government plans to combat tax evasion.
The CIN will have to be displayed outside the property (on the front door or doorbell, for instance), as well as on the accommodation website and on any online listing, including on platforms such as Airbnb, with fines of up to 8,000 euros for those flouting the rule.
According to the Tourism Ministry however, sanctions will only kick in two months after the introduction of the requirement, thus giving owners two months to get the code via the relevant platform.
Liquid limits reintroduced at some airports
A 100ml limit on liquids carried in hand luggage will be temporarily reintroduced at some airports around Europe from Sunday, September 1st.
The installation of new high-tech EDSCB (Explosive Detection Systems for Cabin Baggage) scanners allowed some airports across the bloc to scrap the old limit on liquids, aerosols, and gels (known as LAGs) earlier this year.
However, following concerns over the scanners’ reliability, the European Commission said it “will temporarily enforce restrictions on liquid screening” at airports that use the new technology.

Venice’s Historical Regatta
The 2024 edition of Venice’s Historical Regatta (Regata Storica) – one of the most eagerly anticipated events in the city’s calendar – will take place on Sunday, September 1st.
Rowing races along the Grand Canal will kick off at 4.30pm, with the final (and usually most spectacular) contest starting at 6.10pm.
As by tradition, the races will be preceded by a water parade showcasing costumed rowers sailing down the canal on board decorated boats.
