People applying for Italian citizenship by descent in 2025 will have to pay twice the previous fee to file their requests with consulates in their home countries. Tell us how you feel about it in this quick survey.

The fee required for filing citizenship by descent applications at Italian consulates around the world will stand at €600 in 2025, up from €300, as part of a contested law amendment included in Italy’s latest budget bill.

The amendment was first proposed by lawmakers within the ruling hard-right coalition in early October, sparking vehement protests from citizenship campaigners and lawyer associations.

Lawyer groups AUCI and AGIS said in a joint statement in November that, if passed, the measure would end up placing “an unjustified barrier” in citizenship by descent applications, “turning a right into a privilege only accessible by those who can afford it”.

We want to hear from readers who are affected by this consular fee hike. Please take a minute to share your views in our survey below. If it doesn't appear below please click here.
