The fee required for filing citizenship by descent applications at Italian consulates around the world will stand at €600 in 2025, up from €300, as part of a contested law amendment included in Italy’s latest budget bill.
The amendment was first proposed by lawmakers within the ruling hard-right coalition in early October, sparking vehement protests from citizenship campaigners and lawyer associations.
Lawyer groups AUCI and AGIS said in a joint statement in November that, if passed, the measure would end up placing “an unjustified barrier” in citizenship by descent applications, “turning a right into a privilege only accessible by those who can afford it”.
