Exactly my thoughts. I obtained citizenship via my great grandparents with the view of wanting to re-patriate to Italy. But my brother and nephew are now locked out. If my family cannot join me in Italy, why should I stay there? To add insult to injury, they made it even harder for my spouse to get citizenship. Now my spouse does not want to live in Italy with no way of obtaining any rights. Look at what Trump does to non-citizens in the US! She is afraid that can happen to her in Italy!

I feel like Italy could, and should, absolutely clamp down on abuse. But they could certainly do so while still leaving the door open for 2nd or 3rd generation emigrants, who are NOT looking to abuse the system, to qualify for citizenship by descent. Wouldn't it be a good thing for Italy if the great grandchildren of the people who left in the 20th century wanted to come back to Italy?
