Protesters and police clash in Turin after social centre eviction
At least nine police officers were injured during demonstrations held in Turin on Saturday to protest the closure of the Askatasuna anarchist and anticapitalist 'social centre', Il Sole 24 Ore newspaper reported.
Police had cleared and sealed off the occupied building on Thursday as part of an investigation into recent attacks on the offices of La Stampa newspaper and defence giant Leonardo during pro-Palestinian demonstrations.
Saturday's march, which was reportedly attended by at least 2,000 people, began peacefully, but a group of masked and hooded people tried to break through a police cordon to access the building, throwing bottles and other objects.
Police intervened with water cannons and tear gas, while protesters set fire to dumpsters, throwing firecrackers and stones.
Further demonstrations were announced at the end of the protest, starting on New Year's Eve, according to national broadcaster Rai.
Italian court rejects appeal from Brit-Aussie parents separated from children
An Abruzzo court has rejected an appeal by Anglo-Australian couple Nathan Trevallion and Catherine Birmingham against the court-ordered removal of their three young children, Italian media reported.
The ruling means the children will likely spend Christmas in the foster home in the coastal town of Vasto where they have been staying with their mother.
The family was separated in November after a judge suspended Trevallion and Birmingham's 'parental responsibility' due to concerns that their off-grid lifestyle was causing the children "serious harm".
The couple's lawyers expressed hope that the family would soon be reunited given the court's observation that they were making "appreciable" progress towards meeting the judge's requirements, according to Italian news agency Ansa.
