The announcement comes after weeks of industrial action at Elkann's Exor Group over concerns about possible job cuts at La Stampa and La Repubblica, a leftist daily which is also being sold off.
"GEDI Group and SAE Group announce that they have signed a preliminary agreement for the sale of La Stampa to the latter," the companies said in a statement.
SAE "aims to ensure continuity in the newspaper’s historic positioning, while preserving its editorial independence", they added.

The deal is expected to be completed in the first half of 2026, the statement said, without revealing the price or any other plans for the paper.
GEDI has also been in negotiations with a Greek media group, Antenna, for the sale of La Repubblica.
Elkann, the grandson of famous Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli, is also the chairman of Italian-US-French car giant Stellantis, whose brands include Jeep and Fiat.
