Most of Italy remains on red alert for heat
The latest heat bulletin released by Italy’s Health Ministry shows that 25 of the 27 major cities in Italy remained on the highest heat alert on Tuesday morning, and will remain so at least until Wednesday, August 5th.
The cities on red alert are Ancona, Bari, Bolzano, Campobasso, Civitavecchia, Florence, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Rieti, Rome, Turin, Viterbo, Bologna, Brescia, Cagliari, Milan, Naples, Pescara, Venice, Verona, Catania, Genoa, Palermo and Trieste.
Messina in Sicily and Reggio Calabria in Calabria are on orange heat alert, representing medium level risk, particularly for vulnerable people.
Immigration and emigration both declined in Italy in 2025
The number of emigrants decreased in 2025, as just 109,000 Italians emigrated, 22.7 percent fewer than in 2024, according to a new report released by Istat, the national statistics bureau.
Migration to Italy slightly decreased too, -2.6 percent compared to 2024. The drop in incoming flows concerned both the return of Italians from abroad, down from 58,000 to 56,000, and the arrival of foreigners, which fell from 393,000 to 383,000.
Italy to propose new EU migrant hubs outside bloc
Italy will reportedly propose the creation of new migrant return hubs outside European borders at today's emergency meeting of EU Interior Ministers, according to reports by news agency ANSA.
The proposal follows the arrival of thousands of migrants in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa last week that has caused political rifts within the bloc.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, one of the most outspoken critics of the Sánchez government's handling of the event, temporarily paused Schengen arrangements with its Mediterranean neighbour.
The migrant return hubs, called centri di rimpatrio in Italian (repatriation centres), would be modelled on Italy’s migrant centres in Shëngjin and Gjadër in Albania but financed and coordinated by the EU. Several African countries are being considered to host the hubs, with Uganda, Rwanda and Ghana mentioned as options.
Italian Tesla sales slide in July
Tesla's new car registrations in Italy plunged 77 percent year-on-year in July, with just 105 vehicles sold in the whole of Italy last month, after a 43 percent increase the month before, according to data from the Italian transport ministry.
In the first seven months of 2026, registrations were up 15.86 percent compared to the same period of 2025. The company has sold only 8,023 new vehicles in Italy in 2026 so far.
