Pope recovering after lung cancer operation
Pope Leo XIV was recovering in hospital on Thursday after a tumour removed from his lung was found to be cancerous, with the Church awaiting the results of tests to determine if the cancer has spread.
"It's a shock for everyone. We're in 'wait-and-see' mode," a Vatican source told AFP.
He underwent the 90-minute operation at Rome's Gemelli hospital on Tuesday, after which the Vatican said he spent a "calm" night.
The Vatican expects the pope’s recovery to take around a week, with all papal audiences cancelled until October 20th, AFP reported.
Police identify Rome minicar attackers
Police have tracked down the perpetrators behind at least six assaults delivered from a minicar in Rome, including one that left 42-year-old actor Davide Iacopini in intensive care, national media reported on Wednesday.
The suspects, two minors aged 16 and 17 years old, confessed to carrying out the attacks in Rome’s Monteverde and Testaccio neighbourhoods between October 4th and 5th.
They were identified with the help of a mechanic who had done work on the black minicar owned by one of the boys, whose stickers appeared in CCTV footage reviewed by police.
The teens were charged with attempted homicide and will be now turned over to the juvenile prosecutor's office, which must decide whether to pursue the charges.
Cabinet approves Highway Code reforms
Italy’s Council of Ministers has given the green light to updates to the Highway Code petitioned for by the transport ministry, La Repubblica newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Planned changes include scrapping the requirement for drivers to carry paper driving licences provided they can produce them in digital form, and allowing self-driving vehicles in prescribed areas.
Under the draft law, motorcyclists will also be allowed to use highway emergency lanes in the event of an accident or traffic delays.
Cabinet’s approval is the first step in a parliamentary process that will continue over the coming months, with the new rules expected to come into force in 2027.
