Wizz Air is launching new flight routes from Naples to Brasov in Romania, Chisinau in Moldova, and Tel Aviv, as well as extending its seasonal route to Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh.
And passengers using Rome's Fiumicino airport will benefit from twice-weekly ITA Airways flights to the Mauritius starting in November, as well as EasyJet flights to Strasbourg.
New train routes
Italy’s state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato (FS) continues to expand its Treni Turistici Italiani offering this autumn, with more tourist-focused services available for both popular routes and lesser-known itineraries.
The initiative aims to encourage both Italians and visitors to travel beyond the major cities, particularly during the quieter autumn months when temperatures are more comfortable and crowds have thinned.
Among the routes opening up in September or October are the Espresso Assisi from Rome to the medieval hill town of Assisi in Umbria, the Espresso Langhe e Monferrato night train linking Rome to Alba in Piedmont, and the Espresso Val d'Orcia e Siena from Rome to Siena.

Strikes
Transport strikes have become a frequent occurrence in Italy in recent years, and as soon as the franchigia estiva summer strike ban comes to an end in early September, they'll be starting up again.
Things are set to kick off with a nationwide rail strike starting on the evening of Thursday, September 4th and running until 6pm on Friday, September 5th, followed by multiple airline and airport staff strikes on Saturday, September 6th.

A 24-hour nationwide walkout by both airline and airport staff is also expected to cause disruption for passengers travelling by plane on Friday, September 26th.
Helpfully, strikes in Italy are usually announced several weeks ahead of time (and often subsequently postponed or rescheduled) and listed on the Transport Ministry's online calendar.

New EU passport checks system
The EU's soon-to-be-launched Entry & Exit System (EES) is an enhanced biometric passport check designed to replace manual passport stamping.
After repeated delays, the current scheduled start date is October 12th, with a phased introduction planned.

When non-EU travellers first enter the Schengen area, they will need to register with the EES by sharing their name, biometric data (fingerprints and facial scans) and the date and place of entry and exit. Once completed, you only need to repeat this process once every three years, or when your passport expires.
The system will only be used on the Schengen area's external borders - so you won’t encounter it for travel between Italy and Germany, for example, but you will if you fly into Italy from the US.
While the start date is in mid-October, it will roll out at different checkpoints over a six-month period, with at least half of Italy's checkpoints using the system within three months - so you may or may not encounter it if you're travelling to Italy from outside the EU in late 2025.
